Natacha Duarte Uses Felt-Tip Markers to Create Exotic Prints for Celiab's AW15 Collection

Inspired by the beauty of the Lisbon Botanical gardens, Spanish artist and printmaker, Natacha Duarte used color felt-tip pens to bring a sense of exoticism to CeliaB’s AW 2015 collection.

Formerly a printmaker at Zara, Natacha Duarte is now working in Lisbon as a freelance print/pattern designer for fashion brands and home accessories with a list of clients that includes Reebok, Mango, ASOS, Sisley, River Island and Ananda Pascual. Duarte’s recent collaboration with CeliaB, a colorful, fun and quirky Spanish fashion house, showcases an exciting take on what the printmaker saw during a visit to the Lisbon Botanical Gardens. “These gardens have all sort of exotic plants brought from old Portuguese colonies in India, Africa and Brazil,” explained Duarte. “The pattern was designed by hand using color felt-tip pens to give it a more naif look.”

Duarte’s raw and shapely detailings are an ideal print for founder of CeilaB, Celia Bernardo’s new collection because Bernardo is known to outfit her collection with bold inspirations rooted from her travels, from stripes seen in Rajasthan to batiks from Indonesia. The fashion designer’s use of traditional motifs seamlessly blends with exaggerated textures and bold bursts of print and color, putting this collaboration on point.
