Miami in Paris: CUT Architectures design PNY's new Marais Outpost

Every city has a famous burger. In paris, PNY (Paris New York) founder Rudy Guénaire created a hamburger so succulent that the prime piece of beef begged to be served out of a prized space — enter CUT Architectures. First, Guénaire teamed up with CUT’s founders Benjamin Clarens & Yann Martin back in 2012 for the design of PNY’s flagship Faubourg St-Denis outpost, then again in 2014 for PNY’s Oberkampf eaterie. Now, the guys are collaborating for a third time to design the burger joint’s new Marais location. This time, the architects are telling a new story.

CUT’s design of PNY’s first two locations were inspired by Paris' metro illuminated billboards the boxes. The two spaces are each outfitted with neon tube letters set in raw aluminum frames, classic carousel light bulbs, marble tables and brick walls. For PNY’s new Marais shop, Clarens and Martin were inspired by Miami during the 80’s. The architects describe the space as a ‘sober style with flashy colors, neons, cactus and minimalist diner booths.’ This new design is not the usual PNY black and white identity, however it matches perfectly with the neighborhood’s funky way of life.

The two level space effortlessly juxtaposes industrial, stone walls with more contemporary design elements to create a multidimensional aesthetic. The layout of the space is dictated by groupings of tables surrounded in pale pink and baby blue pipe structures that house white fencing. The architects revisit the design attributes of the first two spaces upon introducing the same vintage bulbs as their Faubourg St-Denis restaurant and neon tube lights of their Oberkampf restaurant.

Even though the restaurant is located in Paris, the Miami-80s-vibe fits in perfectly with the Carreau du Temple district. As PNY continues to evolve with the help of CUT, we can’t help but wonder, what’s next?
